Commún Purchases Administration Building On Loretto Heights Campus
Commún is excited to announce that they have closed on the purchase of the 110,000-square-foot administration building on the historic Loretto Heights Campus, a critical step on their path to increase affordable housing, economic vitality and a sense of belonging in the Southwest Denver community.
The acquisition, which was made possible through generous funding from Colorado Prop 123 Colorado Affordable Housing Financing Fund and Hartman Ely Investments, will provide 173 units of affordable housing within the historic building and adjacent properties, along with mixed retail, childcare, and event spaces. The building was constructed by the Sisters of Loretto in 1890, and has served as dormitories, classrooms, and offices for the past 135 years. The restoration of this building is the next step of Commún's muti-phase community-led initiative to improve community resilience through community-initiated solutions, including the Loretto Heights Community Center, more affordable housing, and community gathering space. Commún now owns the 40,000-square-foot Machebeuf Hall—future home of the Loretto Heights Community Center—the historic Administration Building, the 1891 Steam Plant, the 1916 Priest House, and another parcel adjacent to the central quadrangle, collectively known as Loretto Commons.
The Loretto Heights Community Center and the Administration Building will work hand in hand to provide housing, services, jobs, and vibrant gathering spaces for and by Southwest Denver residents. Commún will continue to work with Southwest Denver residents to design the properties to build on the community’s strengths. Loretto Commons will be a place where everyone can come to find community, support in challenging times, and a place to celebrate joy together.
