YAASPA Hosts Black Liberation Festival

In late February, Young Aspiring Americans for Social and Political Activism (YAASPA) hosted a Black Liberation Festival at the ABC Community Hub, bringing community members together for an evening of connection and celebration.

The festival highlighted the depth and breadth of Black history, culture, and lived experiences through a range of wellness activities and artistic expression. Throughout the evening, attendees participated in a talent show, open mic, workshops, and connected with community resources while enjoying music and food. The event created space for creativity, reflection, and community building.

For many years, YAASPA hosted the MLK Jr. Summit. This year, the organization transitioned to the Black Liberation Festival to create a more inclusive space that recognizes the many individuals, past and present, who have shaped and contributed to Black communities. The shift reflects YAASPA’s ongoing commitment to growth and responsiveness to community voices.

The festival was envisioned by Tashan Montgomery, who worked closely with youth leaders Keelie, Melissa, Sandy, and Tsion, as well as ABC Community Hub tenants, to bring the event to life. Their collaboration helped ensure the festival reflected the community's interests and strengths.

The event saw strong attendance and meaningful engagement throughout the evening. Thank you to the Hub partners and community organizations who shared their time, resources, and talents to make the festival possible.
